Founded in 1979, Eco Modeling is a sole proprietorship of Dr. Richard Park . For many years, while Dr. Park was a professor, it served as a vehicle for funding projects that were not appropriate for university funding. Several years ago, in response to increased interest by governmental agencies and industry, it became a full-time endeavor. The Eco Modeling office is on the Gulf Coast near the Bay of St. Louis and New Orleans. Through telecommuting, the firm maintains a virtual office; for example, the principal programmer Jonathan Clough is currently located in Vermont.
Eco Modeling specializes in development and application of, and training in environmental risk models. Of particular importance has been development of the AQUATOX model for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The model is unique in that it represents both the fate and effects of toxic materials and conventional pollutants in a variety of aquatic ecosystems.
We also have expertise in developing spatially explicit rule-based
models for environmental analysis. The sea-level rise model SLAMM
was developed by Dr.
Park and colleagues and applied to 20% of the coast of the contiguous
United States for EPA's report to Congress on global climate change.
The results were
quoted by President Clinton and cited in Newsweek. Subsequent case
studies have included the potential impacts of global climate change
and sea-level rise
on Puget Sound, South Florida, and Delaware Bay. Currently, the
coasts of Georgia and South Carolina are being simulated at a scale of
30 m X 30 m.
Other projects have involved development of probabilistic spreadsheet models, and organization of short courses, workshops, and conferences on ecological and environmental risk assessment modeling.
